Genetic Variability, Correlation among Agronomic Traits, and Genetic Progress in a Sugarcane Diversity Panel

Sugarcane breeding programs require 15 years of experimentation to create more productive cultivars, and estimates genetic progress can indicate the efficiency programs. In this study, we used a diversity panel, Brazilian Panel Genotypes (BPSG), with following objectives: (i) estimate, through mixed model, adjusted means parameters ten traits evaluated over three harvest years; (ii) estimate genotypic correlation among those traits; (iii) six decades breeding. The heritabilities ranged from 0.43 0.88, detected 42 significant correlations, 9 negative 33 positive. Over decades, sucrose-related BRIX, POL%C, POL%J showed an average increase per decade 0.27 °Brix, 0.26% 0.31%, respectively. Stalk number, height, weight plot, cane sucrose yields revealed increases 3.27 stalks, 0.06 m, 9.42 kg, 11.22 t/ha, 2.08 main agronomic is discussed historical series sugarcane genotypes present in BPSG. findings study could contribute management new strategies allow for future studies associative mapping.
